Ending Date:  January 29, 2008
Textbooks:   Handouts (to be printed from online Reference Materials RefMat) and a link to the PowerPoint Presentation will be provided.  No "text books" required.
Reference Material:  All Reference materials will be available online at A & P RefMat.  You will be provided an individual ID and password in an email prior to the first class.

Course Description:

Begin by getting acquainted with basic anatomy and physiology, then learn how the body interacts and is interdependent of all the various systems.  This course, unlike many A&P courses, is less focused on naming and memorizing and more on how the body works -- what weakens it and what makes it healthier.  It is simply taught, without all the technical pitfalls.

Educational Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Follow basic lingo found in Anatomy & Physiology material
  • Understand that atoms, molecules and cells, tissue, organs, glands and body systems have the same basic needs
  • Understand the functions of each body system
  • Understand how interdependent each body function is to other body functions
  • How to find the weak link in the chain of body functions
  • The basic care and keeping of the human body
Teaching Strategies:

Class lectures will utilize PowerPoint slides.  Instruction portion fosters student questions, which enriches the depth of material covered.  Homework assignments given to support the material covered in that day.  Two pop quizzes and a Final Test to follow student’s progress will be given.

Requirements for Successful Completion of this Course:

Student must achieve a combined average (of all grades issued for this course) of 80% or above to receive a passing grade and credit for this course.

Grades will be issued for this course as A, B, C, D and F.  All Students will receive a final report card in the mail to their home address within 2 weeks of the completion of the course.

School Policies: Attendance is a component of the grade.   The student will receive a percentage grade by calculating the percentage of days attended out of the total days of class.  This percentage will constitute 20% of the student’s final grade.   Students who missed class are encouraged to obtain notes from the other students.  Students are encouraged to contact the instructor during his/her allotted hours, within two days of the absence.   Any work due must be completed within 2 class days of returning to class following an absence.   All quizzes and exams will be posted for 48 hours when scheduled.  It is the student’s responsibility to make login, take the class, print out score given and keep in his records. Failure to do so will result in a 0 for that quiz or exam.   There will be charge for make-up instruction.  All make up instruction or assessment must be completed during instructor’s allotted hours.

Classroom Policies:

  • Student must be connected to the appropriate Webinar 10 minutes before class starts
  • Student must introduce in conference call at least 5 min before class
  • Student must make sure that no background noises infiltrate into the conference call
  • There will be at least one 10 minute break for every hour of instruction
  • We encourage and value difference in opinion; however any student who become combative or uses degrading language or comments will be given one verbal warning before being asked to leave.  The student who is asked to leave class will be marked absent for that day
  • Additional help from the instructor is available during instructor’s allotted time

Honor System:  Collaboration is encouraged on homework assignments and test preparation.  For this purpose we will be providing a student chat room, however all students are expected to produce independent work on all exams.   People will be putting their trust in your integrity and placing their health, and possibly their lives, in your hands.   Therefore, any student caught cheating on an exam will be referred to the school administration and, if it is proven the student cheated, he/she will receive a failing grade for the semester.
